Chapter Eight

The week had passed quickly, although Hugh still hadn’t quite come to terms with everything that had happened. He was still trying to process the fact that his father had known Chris’ father and had, for some reason, welcomed Lance into their home and revealed to him secrets about the werewolf community. This seemed to go against everything that Hugh knew about his father, and sadly nothing in Lance’s journal shed any light on why Hugh’s father would have done such a thing. Hugh wasn’t sure if he was more angry or surprised, but after discovering this he felt bitter about being exiled and being called a betrayer. He wasn’t sure of the reception he’d get when he returned home, but he wasn’t going to let them turn him away until he’d gotten some answers.

He was though glad that Laura seemed to have accepted him as a suitable partner for Chris, although of course she knew nothing about this little adventure they were planning. Chris had been distracted all week, which was understandable. They were both a little distracted. Hugh had noticed that something about Chris had changed, something in his scent, but he put this down to the fact that both of them were confused and dazed with everything they had learned.

For Hugh, the fact that Lance was able to pursue this line of investigation showed that the wolves hadn’t been nearly as careful or as a smart as they thought they had been in hiding themselves in plain sight. It seemed that only one enterprising man could discover a great deal about their culture. There were a few theories that were spinning in Hugh’s mind and he decided not to share these with Chris, for none of them were good. He knew how ruthless and unforgiving his father could be and he hated to think of what might have happened if Lance decided he was going to reveal the truth about the wolves. Lance had only died a year ago, so Hugh didn’t think his father would have been responsible for that after all this time, but he wasn’t ready to dismiss the possibility completely. Perhaps Lance had remained hidden, but John had discovered where he was living and tracked him down. Maybe Lance thought that enough time had passed, and it was time to reveal the truth about the wolves, and John found out, perhaps through the Oracle, and decided to stop Lance. If John could exile his own son, then the life of a human wouldn’t mean that much to him, especially not when compared with the sanctity of the wolves.

And that meant that Chris was in danger as well.

Perhaps this was what John had meant when he had accused Hugh of betraying him. Perhaps it was bringing this truth to light that had concerned John.

But what did it all mean? What was the link of the past, and what did it mean for their future?

The only way was for Hugh to return home and face those who had shunned him.
